Sounds are identical to the Southern PS-4 1372, but that's the type of whistle the 290 had.
After watching the videos of the real #290, I feel that the Legacy Blue Comet 833/N&W J whistle is closer in sound than the UP whistle for this model. Oh well. Just my opinion...

Honestly, I have to agree the J/Blue Comet whistle does sound more appropriate.
I think Lionel is still selling the replacement Blue Comet Legacy Lite sound board from 2013, so some might be able to do a quick board swap here if the boards are still the same construction.
I got to play with the Halloween Pacific last night - it is neat and I had some fun! Obviously, its a scale fantasy engine - and I like it and applaud Lionel for staying in touch with the light and fun aspect of the hobby for us scale-oriented alleged grownups. I am glad I ordered the cars, although they're not due until next year sometime.
I don't have a Smart phone so video will have to wait. I can tell you the sound clips are numerous and very well done ~ seems like a Dracula voice for the engine crew and spooky voices for the tower com - and there's many different clips - I couldn't count them all. Bell is an excellent rendition of a spooky sounding bell, and whistle is screaming banshee - I think that's what its called. As always, Lionel's RS are the best.
Even w/o the cars the engine looked pretty cool running around my layout.

Anyone ever replace a sound board? Is soldering involved?
Kallus- I would like to see that. That sounds cool. Dracula is the conductor. Of course he is. Come Sit down Look into my eyes
Have fun.

There is a mystery: included in the box are 2 long black screws in a bag with black rubber spacers.
Mine came with that and also in that bag was a traditional coupler, which I assume is for switching out the scale coupler for double heading I'm guessing.
Don't remember seeing a bag with the traditional coupler but still scratching my head over the 2 mysterious long screws.
Saw this video on the Blue Comet (Pacific?) by Mike R - good stuff, especially about lubrication and the rubber O ring on the whistle fill:
You can hear the sounds of the Halloween Pacific on Lionel's Facebook page on The Ryan & Dave Show.
Did anyone else get 290?
