I can remember which company made the Tennessean Ps-4 4-6-2, and for what you have to pay for one now, and that's if you can find one! Why don't they run it again, or why don't Lionel or MTH do one with all of the Bells and Whistles. But I can't get anyone interested in doing a C&O Hudson or C&O K-3/K3a either.

Guys your Southern stuff looks Super Great. I remember all of those engines growing up around the Southern Railway as a kid, my step dad was a Southern Engineer, and a camera nut to boot. Got some of his pictures somewhere that were taken before WW2, and some after he came back from the Pacific Theater. He did serve time on the 1401, and also the Bullet Nose Tennessean, as fireman. If we can ever find all of those old memories, I'll get somebody more computer savy than I, and post those old pictures for you Southern Railway Folks...............Brandy!

Well I puled this DL109 from the box today.  I wanted to look under the hood plus I have been contemplating selling it.  Sure do wish the boys in Maryland would have used their dies with dual headlights although not prototypical for the Southern DL109.

I think they are too good looking to sell.  Maybe if time willing I can add a prototypical larger lower headlight housing.

Charlotte Trolley:

When Walt Cameron died in June I was reminded of the model of the Charlotte Trolley he produced. [the Trolleys Charlotte purchased were the same as the New Orleans light railcars--model photos below].

Charlotte's Trolleys were discontinued in 1938, later resurrected for a short time by one Mayor and then discontinued again. It later was used and abused as a roadside market/store. Eventually folks raised $250,000 to restore it cosmetically, electrically and mechanically[installed a motor] whereupon it was again stored ten years. This week the Charlotte Observer newspaper, better known as "the Charlotte Disturber", announced that the Trolley[#85] was to be put to use on Charlotte's soon to be expanded light rail system.

{Charlotte suburban resident SRR Sean probably knows more and can post the details}.

Walt Cameron's Brother lived in the Burlington,N.C. area and once when Walt was here for a visit we had planned to meet for lunch but I was traveling overseas and missed the chance to hookup. Walt was a great guy and model builder and fun to chat with.

Some argue that operating without the overheads a Trolley is "just a bus". As far as I am concerned if it is on rails it is a Trolley.

The 4501 is a Southern class Ms Light Mikado not a Southern class Ms-4 Heavy.  And the Lionel heavy Mikado does not look like either.  Lionel has produced the 4501 so they should have the tooling.

Ron

Ron is right. The 4501 was built in 1911, I think, and the heavy or light mikado design were USRA built during WWI. If Lionel still has access to that early 1990s tooling (I think Mike Wolfe helped design this and the FRISCO version) that would be the most appropriate without a total retooling.

I was thinking of picking up another 4501 green version and repainting. Most people would want the Legacy control though, I would suspect.

Roger,

Mike R. and the other four or five Lionel reps that visited the local toy train shop in Spencer (Concord only a few miles away)  several times within the last year LISTENED!

I have been emailing a VP at MTH for at least 4 or 5-years about a High Nose GP30.  When Mike W. was here 2+-years ago for NS-Heritage Event discussed with him.  He claimed he was going to take picture of “our” active Southern 2601.  At that time we also were hosting an active N&W 522.  But obviously NO action.  On the other hand Mike R. and company LISTENED in less than a year.

Roger, the guys at Lionel have heard us but not the boys in Maryland.  I would prefer this with DCS command system but will be buying the Lionel due to ship Feb 2015.

Ironically I recently sent another email about a High Nose GP30 to the VP in Maryland. I guess I will followup with a note addressing the fact that Lionel responded in less than a year and I (we) have been asking MTH for over 5-years.

The two numbers are 2594 and 2601. One is SRM and the other is Spencer. Wonder if Lionel had to pay for the rights to use these numbers? Also noted the N&W unit is 522, located in Roanoke.

Price seems high to me. For that amount, I got the MTH Southern ABA F7 set a few years ago. It is worth thinking about, though!

Yes Larry the price is a little stiff.  But this is in fact the last engine on my want list.  And if it is faithful to 2601 I will pay MSRP!  But wish it was MTH with DCS to lash-up to my other Southern engines.

Just have to post a picture again.

Hey Dewey, I haven't given up on my "stinkin' diesels"!! I'm still running my PS4 steam engine. I'm hoping that MTH will have in their new catalog the following steam engines (MTH PREMIER):

N&W "J" (with passenger cars)

N&W 1218 "A"

N&W Y6B

After I acquire these engines......I'M DONE WITH STEAM ENGINES!!!...........(I think??)..........lol.........Rogerw.

Dewey,

The Charlotte Trolley is current stored in serviceable condition at the Trolley museum. Right now there's a grass route effort to used part of the former Piedmont & Northern track age Just west of the Football stadium and run a mile and a half to a new proposed Trolley museum. Also the city was planning to use Car 85 on the new Charlotte Transit Gold Line in 2016.

Just one note - when NS painted this unit, they forgot the check letter behind the cab number. If Lionel uses these images, they might leave it off as well. The catalog shows the 2594 with the check letter. The 2601 should be 2601 J.

Larry why was the check letter not added at the museum?

An added thought.  I have mixed emotions about adding the check letter.  I wanted this 2601 to reflect the 2601 at/from the museum.  Intended to run in a contemporary situations with 2601 out and about as the NS OCS and/or 611 run by etc.

No Ron, the check letter was never added by the NCTM volunteers. The contemporary 2601 without the check letter is good for anytime after 1995, when it was painted at Chattanooga. I heard street price for these is around $460, but I think I may have to be content with my Atlas Southern SD-35 and GP-35 models, even if they have older electronics.

Has anyone looked into the Williams by Bachmann Southern 4-tonner, number 1957? I was looking on the Nassau Hobby website and found this while looking through the pre-order site. The MSRP is $399.95, but pre-order street price is $100 or so less. Standard Williams tru-blast controls, but it a scale switcher similar to the MTH product. I tried to find these in the 2014 catalog, but were not listed. Has anyone pre-ordered one of these yet?

TM Books and Videos was at my house this week to film my Christmas Train Layout which will appear in their next video being released in a few weeks.  Talked about all my Southern Engines in the Interview portion of the filming and my interest in the Southern Railroad.  Here is photo of my 2 favorite Southern Steam Engines... Southern Crescent and Kanawha.   Ken

Larry:

I preordered the WBB GE 44 tonner from forum sponsor Mr. Muffin's trains.  I asked at York when these would be released and they said next spring.  KJS looking forward to seeing your layout in their next video.

And this from a steam guy who, when he does go diesel, tends to not do the GM thing.

BUT, Lionel still does NOT show any of the cataloged GP30's on their shipping schedule!  I am looking for the one that I ordered.

Tommy,

My Southern Kanawha is MTH Premier ProtoSounds 2 appeared in 2010 Vol 2 catalog.  It was also in MTH’s 2005 catalog.  It is the most detailed steam engines I have.  It is a great runner and sounds very good too.  MTH at same time manufactured C&O Kanawha.  It is very nice engine too.   I posted some more close-up pictures on Berkshire thread and a video of my engine not to long ago.   Here is the link…

Thanks for the photos Ken.

Ms-4 road number 4866 was built at the Richmond Works in 1926 and retired for scrap in 1952.

As your 4866 prototype photo shows it mounted an Elesco Feedwater Heater astride the Smokebox and appears[?] to have had a 6-wheel tender. The catalog photo does not show it equipped with either the Elesco Heater or the 6-wheel tender. However, engine schematics and most photos show four wheel tenders.

The Southern never had a water supply problem on its main line routes and solved the coal problem by building up the bunker capacity on its tenders which Lionel has done. There was little need for 14,000 gallon 6-wheel tenders.

Hopefully the actual model will be produced correctly--we shall see? Easy solution is to correct the road number, better solution is to equip it with an Elesco.[ Ms-4s produced after road number 4850 in 1926 were equipped with Elesco Feedwater Heaters].

ps: Ms-4 #4866 was serviced out of Pegram Shops in Atlanta and had the Shop's traditional fingernail headlight visor as well as angled number boards. TIES Magazine photo of #4866 in May 1948 shows a 10,000 gallon 4-wheel tender.

Dewey, thanks for the information.  I kind of doubt Lionel will make the pro-typical model.  It appears they using the same model for many different road names like they have done in the past with other engines.   Thanks for the sharing the photo.  There are several differences in the photo I found and the one you have.  I wonder why?  I assume there were some changes to the engine at some point…maybe in Atlanta?  I can’t remember where I found this photo.  I did a Google search and took snapshot of it out of an article that I found online.  Ken
