I wonder ...
Does anyone at Lionel LLC actually read threads like this or take "wish lists" into account when planning future production runs? I haven't read "In response to popular demand ..." in any recent new product offer in a Lionel catalog.
The costs of creating a NEW design, related tooling for producing it, and marketing efforts to stimulate sales are staggering; so it's understandable that decision-makers tend to err on the side of caution. Perhaps the unwritten reason(s) why some previous train manufacturers are now defunct is, they made trains some hobbyists wished for but didn't buy. Or at least, not enough of them.
Yes, I offered a wish for a Lionel product for my layout, but I don't expect anything from it! The highest-paid job at a train-making company would be PRODUCTION PROGNOSTICATOR, but there aren't any job candidates with a proven record of sales success. "Wishcraft" is uncomfortably close to "Witchcraft!"
Is there a marketplace niche for a train maker with a mission statement like: "We make the trains you (and at least Nth others) wish for." Lionel may already be near that tactic with "Made to Order" trains. Not enough orders - no trains. The only cost for such offers, if not ordered in a sufficient number, is wasted paper and ink for a catalog page.
Meanwhile, the "good guessers" at Lionel and other companies will carry on valiantly and live with the hope that some of their guesses are "right."
