Here’s another GP60 that I acquired via the bay, which brings my GP60 total to three, not that I’m trying to keep up with Brian and Izzy or anything.  It’s my first MTH engine in the Santa Fe war bonnet livery.  It’s brand new only 57 min. on the chronograph and .6 mi. on the odometer.

Nah, interchange with NG cars is quite silly. Besides, I'm pretty sure these have postwar car markings.

I love the WP&Y and will at least keep one like this just for the heck of it. The AMS boxcars are so much better looking than the Bachmann ones, but they're not exactly cheap (or easy to find).

Larry, those sure are nice looking engines! One day I too will have one! I just hope its before I go color blind or something like that! LOL

I like it too, Mike.  BNSF has been repainting their GP60Ms with the swoosh livery with the trucks painted black.  The war bonnet livery has been going bye bye.  The full size 137 has already been repainted.  MTH offered a couple of them in the new swoosh livery in the 2017 Vol.2 catalog along with the one I recently purchased.  I should get one to complete my variety pack of the four different liveries the BNSF GP60Ms have been in or are in now.

Found this Cleveland Union Terminal GP9 at Pat's while randomly browsing for other stuff.  Will look great working around Terminal Tower on my when-I-hit-the-Powerball dream layout.

Until then I'll have to be content with the shelf loop I'm building for the office.  😉

Got curious & looked up more info on these units & found this old 5x7 photo from a private collection for cheap on a large internet auction site:

Will probably frame & hang somewhere around the office.

Yes!

I got this tender to go with my "tender-less" 2-8-0:

IMG_20181115_073356079

It is in mint condition, and everything (lights, whistle, etc.) works.

Although it's marked "Pennsylvania" (the loco was originally a "Long Island" engine), and has the Dolphin trucks and water scoop (which I'm pretty sure was not needed on a freight engine!) I prefer the Pennsy markings, and can (easily) over look the rest...and all for well under $40.00.

The other day I woke up early and got on the putor, glad I did. There was a 6-81523 B&O FB-2 Powered with 3 minutes left and no bids. Opening Bid $125 or buy it now for $300 ( stated used but works perfectly. ) I haven't been able to set up a test track yet or take pics which will follow this afternoon/evening But for $125 It was a deal, It has legacy control and railsounds.

Way 2 Go Bill! That was a nice score! You should bring it over one day, and we can play trains - might go good with my powered (not pictured) and dummy A units  as long as you don't mind getting carpet lint and cat hairs in your gears! Man, I love the look of those engines! And the paint!

The stamped metal sided trucks are correct for a 312 - the sintered/cast trucks came out with the knuckle couplers well after the 312 was out of production. It’s a definite improvement in looks adding the cast trucks to the tender (and adding a diecast trailing truck if the 312 has the bare wheel trailing truck).

MTN, you are correct about the stamped trucks.  And my, are they ugly!

As for the diecast trailing truck, I ordered one of those online, right after I bought the 312, and it arrived early in the week.  Now I'm waiting for the correct shoulder screw from The Train Tender, so I can mount it.  (That same trailing truck also makes a big improvement in the looks of a 302, btw).

Meanwhile, I've been repainting the tender.  And last night I installed a NOS bell on the 312's boiler front.  (It was missing its original bell).  Once I get the tender lettered, the only major operations left will be to install the LED headlight and fabricate a new drawbar.

Really? I think they're (kind of) charming...

I think I did the same thing to both a 312 and a 302; it does make a big difference...

I picked up some Lionel postwar trains at an estate sale yesterday. A 2020 turbine, 6464 M&StL boxcar, and 6414 auto loader missing one auto.

IMG_8123IMG_8124IMG_8125

The 2020 is an old warhorse and must have sat around a long time.  Gave the wheels and pickup rollers a quick cleaning and oiled the axles for its first run. I may not clean the body to preserve the time its been around. I still need to clean and lube the motor and drivetrain. I'll add a video soon.

Nice score, Frank! I love the old flashlight that came in the box! Haven't seen one of those loooong ones in years!!  And the  M St L box car, that came as part of the set I got for Christmas in the late 50's, always loved that car for some reason. And I completely like your idea of leaving the dirt on the engine. I have a couple scheduled for cleanup - I may also just skip the shell cleaning. Have fun!

Hope to buy something cool at the Greenberg show in Wilmington MA today.  Leaving in about 1/2 hour.  Hyper extended my knee on Thursday.  Tested it yesterday  up in Maine with my old ski knee brace and all is well. Walked a little over 2 miles, so I should be all set to go up and down ice & snow FREE aisles.

Love what you've done with your kitchen.  Good choice in appliances and agree that the cabinets need more shelves.  Tell Izzy that I just got back from Memories Ice Cream.  I had a coffee heath bar cone and then shared with Gracie.IMG_0341

Looks to me like a Peanut Float!

Squirrel History that I didn't know.  Originated in MA not far from where I bought the car today.

Since 1888, The Squirrel Brand Co. has manufactured the ultimate nut. Squirrel Brand was born during the Industrial Revolution and has weathered two World Wars, the Great Depression, and countless revolutions in the business world. Through it all, the company has remained steadfast in its commitment to produce the finest quality products for its customers.

Despite industry consolidation, The Squirrel Brand Co. has remained an independent, family-owned business. The company was originally founded in 1888 in Roxbury, MA, but by 1899, Mr. Perley G. Gerrish acquired an interest in Squirrel Brand and moved the company to Cambridge, MA. He began to sell his mixed nut varieties from store to store throughout the Boston area by means of horse and wagon.

Squirrel Brand nuts were carried to the South Pole by Admiral Richard Byrd on his first expedition to that area and they were shipped all over the world during World War II. In fact, one soldier stationed in the Philippines wrote: "I received a Christmas box with a pack of your peanuts in it. They were the only nuts that arrived without worms."

Today, the company is based in Elgin, IL where it continues to produce the ultimate nut under the Squirrel Brand and Southern Style Nuts brand names.

I found Squirrel Brand "Gourmet" nuts on Amazon that seemed more suited to fine spirits or fine wine.  I'll still take mine with beer, well maybe Stout or Porter.  I like dark brews in cold weather.

I grew up with Planters & Fishers Peanuts.

I love the boxcar (and the cars behind it) and the trade card Brian found is great.  But, as a longtime albiet transplanted resident of Mass., I must say I've never heard of this Cambridge-based peanut company.  Only Planters and Virginia Diner peanuts are on my radar. Now, NECCO wafers ... different story .

New book: “Michigan’s Historic Railroad Stations”

By: Michael H. Hodges

1 Book cover Michigan RR Stations

This book is written by a Michigander and published by a Michigan publishing & printing company. It is a hardcover book with 186 pages, full color.  I first saw this book at my local library and checked it out several times. My librarian suggested that I purchase a copy because I have ran out of renewals, so I did.

My favorite station is Grass Lake, built in 1887 by the Michigan Central Railroad, because we have family ties to this station.
