Great Buy Lou, Let me know how it goes, I have one but haven't really used it yet as I am still build the layout!

Colorado Hirailer, I sure hope you get things worked out!

So far it works great. My only complaint is that I can scroll the click wheel on the remote faster than it wants to respond (i.e. moving voltage up and down). I have to be more patient apparently.

Last week, JOEYBATTS posted about a set of Lionel hoppers exclusive to Trainland. Having spent the first 40 years of my life living in Brooklyn, I had to order these two - proving once again that reading this Forum is a bad influence    The funny thing is, in the late 70’s/early 80’s, I lived a couple of blocks from Trainworld when they were on Ave. M, next to the Ave. M subway station.

I really have to stop buying trains... or clear out some additional storage space!!!

Paul,

Love those New York hoppers, love the name Joey Batts, Trainworld is great.  Funny.  I'm sure Ray Liotta would be proud.

I would order all of them.  Only problem is I have no room for much of anything, including these, and I have TWO layouts!

Jerry;

No room... No room... Really??? Come on... just how often do you use the dining room??? What about that extra bathroom??? And do you really need all that stuff you hide in the kitchen cabinets???

But seriously... I hear you. I really have to do some donating of stuff I’ll never run again to clear out some space. The cars are nice - my first LionScale cars, but I had to limit myself to those from my old home, the City of Churches!!!

Very excited...I just ordered this MTH locomotive on Monday from the Model Railroad Shop in Piscataway, New Jersey. I've always loved the Alco RS engines and the Lehigh Valley RR has special significance for me—its office building is in Bethlehem where my Dad went to Lehigh University in the 1940s. And, the railroad was a co-builder of Union Station where he came and went from school, although most likely on the Reading Railroad. The Reading was the LVRR's partner in the building and Bethlehem was the terminus for that branch (the Bethlehem Branch, I believe), and it snaked its way through the South Side...it's now the South Bethlehem Greenway.

I was just in the Lynbrook store Monday Paul. I saw the whole set on the shelf but they are too big for my layout. Good thing or I would have bought 'em all.

Picked these up at one of the antiques and collectibles markets around here.

Conrail Caboose

Conrail caboose is by RMT and frosted lamp light came from the same shop outside the model train exhibit there. Love RMT and its my first o gauge Conrail car which is odd considering I loved Conrail as a kid. They also had a RMT Rahway R.R. caboose for cheap that I should've bought as well but I hope to get that next week.

Plan to use this for my Texas Special project to simulate the stainless steel panels on the locomotives.  It will be applied to plastic sheet material simulating fluting from Union Station:

Props to forumite Hancock52 for buying and testing this product, and bringing it to my attention, and also for the Union Station product which may be a perfect match.  Thanks, Andy.

James,

Live about 10-15min from Lehigh University which my great-grandfather attended in the 40s as well as my grandfather. I have a good amount of relatives who worked for the Steel as well. Love the LVRR and congrats on the ALCO RS-11.

Bought a BIG, and I mean big, RR book today. The title is "The American Railroad Passenger Car" b John H. White printed in 1978The thing is 12 1/2 inches high,10 1/2" wide, 2" thick with 700 pages. White was a curator at the Smithsonian. Book must weigh 20 lbs. Cost $35 but well worth it. Have glanced through it and seems a good read.  Also found an adapter for my Enesco  steam engine with the two mice crew and it works !!  Needs a few cosmetic repairs though.

Over the past week or so I've separately purchased 4 of the 5 car polished aluminum Santa Fe 15" passenger car set:

  • 6-16110 Combo car
  • 6-16111 Diner car
  • 6-16112 Passenger car
  • 6-19113 Vista Observation car

The only one I've received is my favorite--the dome observation car--the polished aluminum and fluted sides are exceptional.  I'll post photos of all four once they are in hand.  I'm passing on the baggage car since the consist will only be 5 or 6 cars.  These will go to the paint shop and become Texas Special cars under a unique lend/lease agreement between SF and MKT.  In fact, the dome observation car, named "Vista Valley" in this set, is former SF "Silver Sky" previously operated as part of the California Zephyr.

The current operator of The Texas Special is seeking a full length dome, 15" polished aluminum car by LIONEL.  Contact info in my profile.

Gee, given the discussion on another thread about the newer types of controllers available, I'm (almost) embarrassed to show my latest arrival:

IMG_20181213_130956361

Got it for under $30.00. As you can see, it's in really good condition, even though the light covers are missing. I may just install some colored bulbs in place of the clear ones and call it good. Both outputs are putting out the correct voltage, and the cord is in fine shape as well.

It's not as big as I imagined it would be (just slightly larger than my Lionel type "S"), and I see now it only goes up to 15 volts, unlike the "S's" 19V, so although the rated wattage is higher (110 vs. 80), the "S" seems to have a little more "head room" on the throttle. Still, I'm pleased with this old piece of equipment.

@Strummer nice AF transformer. Do you primarily run 2 rail Flyer or 3-rail? Nothing to be embarrassed about, it is cool-  I love those handles. I use a #1 35 watt/16 volt output for accessories and an 8b 100 watt, 15 volt output for my 3-rail mainline which was surprisingly a big improvement over my Lionel 1033 on that line.

1. Thank you. I'm really liking it so far. The range of speed(s) is very, very good. Not bad for something made in 1953(?), which I guess makes it a 65(!) year old appliance.

2. I like to run whatever the mood strikes me. Since I just recently got an AF 300, and now this, I'm leaning a little towards the Flyer stuff... at least for now. This old stuff is very affordable, and of course, works great!

Of all the steam engines purchased in the last two years,  The Lionel H-10 is by far the best value and most reliable of the steam engines. My "Pennsylvania Lines" #1709 and "Western Allegheny" #85 H-10 engines with West Lines Tenders are fun to operate.  The swinging bell, Steam Whistle Effect and regular stack smoke give this 2-8-0 engine a lot for its price.  The H-10 can pull ten 21-inch Pennsylvania passenger cars that I detailed with Preiser people.  I finally have engines out of the sealed box that work well and are fun to operate.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Found these Williams E7s on the bay recently with local pickup which saved me shipping.  The bodies are in perfect shape.  Idler gears on the trucks are sloppy.  I will replace the trucks now that I know that Bachman sells them.  (Someone here on the forum was discussing the issue this week and I used the provided link....thanks!.)     I ordered the maximum of 6 and should have them next week, I hope.  The plan is to power the dummy unit, too.

That leads me to another quest.  How to prevent the 2 engines from jumping out of synch.  These engines are Tru-blastII and don't have a lock out switch.  I would actually like to equip the dummy with Tru-blast Plus which does have the lock-out feature. Then, how to install a lock-out switch on the one with Tru-blastII?   I have engines with both and the boards are just different enough that I can't picture an easy retrofit being done.

Any help would be much appreciated,  Phil

@Trussman AWESOME earlier presents for the holidays and congrats on the set complwtion! As I think you know I love Budds, the RDC-9 variation is really cool. Bodies look to be in great shape as well, I have a PW 400 and the lettering i a bit faded in addition the some scratches on the top, nothing noticeable wit those two.

Thank you Steve. I remember you posting about your 400 Budd and that you like the Budd cars. I'm kinda partial to them also. In my younger yrs, I remember seeing them setting in Newtown Pa.

Yep these Budds are in excellent condition. I've always want to get all of the pw Budds, but were a little to rich for me until about a month and half ago I got a very good deal on 404, 2559 and 2550 in one buy.

@Trussman good for you man. Yup I have the PW 400 Budd which I run with the 2550 Conventional Classic(2014?) dummy. Was tempted to go to Gryzboski’s today, since I was up near the Poconos, to pick up another2550 conventional classic(they’re only 39.99-which, IMO, is a good deal) but passed b/c where I was actually was about as from where I live. Still want to get up there some day. Also, not that far from Newton either, if my geoegraphy is correct. Did you grow up in/around Scranton?

Anyway, congrats on your PW set completion. I was at a long-time collector’s house who was looking to sell some of his collection, showed him a pic of my layout, and he asked if the 2550 was an original because , “”now that’s a good car”. Much respect your way to taking your time in completing the collection until you got some good deals. The excellent condition is an awesome plus. Kudos, my friend and fellow Budd fan.

Have you run your powered PW Budds(the 400 and 404) together? If so, did they run together smoothly?

The town I remember seeing the Budd cars was in Newtown Pa (s.e. PA. ), just north of Langhorne Pa. A conventional classic Budd $39.99 sounds like a very good price. I haven't been to Gryzboski's in yrs.  I live in central Pa.

Tomorrow I'll give it a try running the pw 400 and 404 together and see what happens.

Very sorry to hear that ogaugeguy .  I just got my "Boston Elevated" version clear above the dimples and the Railway part had one dimple between the R and a ,  and a and y ,  but all letters are clear. and my  "Merry Christmas Railway " version was above the dimples.  So MTH did get the lettering better on some of the Brills. Maybe see if any other Trenton at your dealer turned out same . If some better maybe you can exchange.

Checked it out at another dealer and it was the same as mine. A real disappointment, but there's obviously nothing to be done except to accept its flaw and keep it. Maybe to other folks who see it, that dimple won't be that obvious. Maybe I'm just fixating on it.

Picked up an 0-4-0 2-rail steam loco with operating headlight and battery power for the tree layout. It's a well-known roadname, though not prototypical.
This little monster has some serious pulling power: a 6-car consist on 8" radius is child's play, and it'll take 3 freight cars up 20% grades like it was built for 'em.

BRIO-33594

3-position conventional operation is managed by its onboard switch. Brio's Command Control version is diesel only right now; hopefully they add steam next year. Maybe by then we'll get Bluetooth as well; then we could get DCC, even if DCS and Legacy are still out of reach.
