A year or so ago I pre ordered the MTH 'Bush UP Funeral' baggage car.  Was short when it arrived and had to let it go. A few weeks ago I spotted a MTH UP baggage car in the FS Forum and was able to acquire it.  When it arrived, I assumed that it was the standard issue from awhile back but to my surprise it was the casket car. The fireplace insert  has a nice warm glow going on now.    All i have to do tomorrow is making sure Judy's single stage snow blower is ready for Sunday and Monday.

I just attended my very first Train Show today. I made three purchases today: something I was looking for, something I found cool, and an impulse buy that does not bode well for my future. First was some hay way cheaper than I could buy online and no shipping! Next was a Box Car because the Pluto Water and Logo was cool.Somehting Needed and Something Cool

All together it was $19. Easily justifiable by anyones standards then things got interesting. My layout (1st one ever) is only 3x5 ft. I did it to see if I would enjoy railroading and I am. I want to build a much larger layout, I have limited space, my two options are finishing off an attic over my garage or expanding my garage to add a "train room. Both are costly and will take 6-9 months as I haven't got past the idea stage. So I have been pondering switching to HO due to size and cost of accessories and over availability. I have not been making any purchases other than what I need now, pretty sensible, right? The train show was by far mostly HO and Down. There were garden trains, some S and probably 1/3rd O gauge. And the meter was definitely tilting towards the HO side.... until my final purchase of the day. (see my next post)

...continued - I walked into one of the side rooms and it was 90% O Guage. In the corner was a stack of rolling freight for $4 a car. All used and in various conditions, but I thought I would grab a couple to practice weathering, replacing trucks, etc. Better to learn a new skill on throwaways, right? Very rational. The guy/owner shouted over to make a stack of cars and an offer, so I asked how many cars are there? (Why would I ask that? -don't know). He told son to come over and count the cars. He counted 52. I looked at the kid and said, would he take $100 for all? (what happened to the mature, responsible, and rational adult? I think by inner 10 year old took over, and he knows I have his back). The kid yelled to his dad and his dad responded back, "find him a box and pack they up!". Now you would think that I would have second thought, buyer's remorse, or wonder how to explain this my wife. - nope. I shelled over a $100 bill! Walked out with my box of cars.(Which by the way much heavier than you would think). So this I know for sure: I am building a larger O Scale three rail layout in the future! I have the cast aluminum P&S 200 tom flat for a while and yes it will get a repaint but I also just found this scratch built crane.  While it would never be considered a great build in this day and age with all the fine scratch builders we have in the hobby today, but for something made in the 30-s or 40's of scrap tin and a few parts, I love.  Individual nuts and bolts on the boom and hundreds of hand punched rivets in the tin it's got a cool factor.  Plus I probably won't be buying a brass KTM or something like that so this is perfect for me. and hey, it's not in the landfill so I am saving the environment.

Hi Guys!

I just picked this up from a Forum Member. I must say this is something I’ve wanted for a long time. It’s the ESE from the Century Club 2. It’s in mint condition. Brand new in the shipper and never used. I’ve only had one problem all of a sudden the smoke unit started working intermittently. Not a big problem. I have an appointment with my friend Alex Malliae next week. Lol!

That crane is awesome, Dennis. It's easy to imagine the care and passion that went into building that. Bit of a treasure, that one!

Incredible workmanship. I'd fix the rigging an leave it as is. It looks like a well used piece of MOW equipment.

CRCole, welcome to the world of O gauge and train shows.  That's usually the way it goes, something you were looking for, something interesting and then the total impulse buy.  Train shows are very dangerous places.

Santa Fe/Charm City, ya gotta love those car racks in the off beat stores.  Usually a lot of 1/32 but every now and again one gets lucky and finds something that works in our little world.

Dennis, I've got to agree with you and Rob, that crane looks great for a vintage scratch build.  Just restring the rigging and send that big hook out on the road to earn it's keep.

Well I must admit that today is the first day AFTER a train show in the central Texas/Dallas area.  The first one in nearly 2 years so I guess I have something to post!  However, first some comments on other posts today.

Craiginor: beautiful Pacific, the Vanderbuilt tender makes it a stand out.

Dennis: You find the most unusual things, but that crane is really a stand out.  Imagine the amount of love / craftsmanship put into it by the builder.  I would keep it as original as possible, it looks great.

CR Cole :  Looking at the picture, you have at least 5 "645X - 245X" early postwar boxcars.  These date from about '48-'53 and make great layout cars.  Their extra weight compared to more recent cars makes them great trackers.  You also have 2 milk cars and at least one operating car of about the same vintage.  Since the 645X boxcars all are listed at about $25 collector value even for "good" condition I would say you made a great deal.

My find today is somewhat unusual since it is clearly marked "29632 built 2009 by Lionel" in very tiny letters, the number 29632 does not appear in any of my reference or price guides.  It is an excellent car of very robust construction.  Metal dome platform and ladders, metal hand rail, die cast frame and fully sprung die cast trucks.  Yet it is not listed.  Any information by anyone on this car would be most appreciated.  Considering I purchased it (rather dusty but otherwise perfect) for $10 I was really impressed by the quality of construction.

Overview, car is 10" long over the coupler ends and about 9" over the tank platform.  Tank is 8.5" long.  The tiny red/white lettering near the ladder says..."CAUTION Kerosene Only".

Here is where the mystery begins, the small white lettering on the lower right side of the tank (in this picture) says..."29632 built 2009 by Lionel".  This number does not appear in any reference material I have.

From an operating point of view here is one of the best parts.  These are fully die cast trucks with actual spring suspension.

By the way...you and I had discussed the "6565" cars a while back and you gave me some key information on a prior discussion on this forum for that series.  Not only was that helpful but it allowed me to find my 6565 "CP" boxcar.  Now if you look at this weeks "Box Car Sunday" you will find that I have another car with all the same 6565 characteristics but all it says on it is ..."Made by Lionel in 2009".  It has the same very robust heavy car casting, die cast frame, die cast and sprung trucks, etc.  A really super car (picture below) but none of the previous discussion (all too early I think) identifies this as part of the 6565 series.  What might you think?

Don, that Southern wave is a nice looking car and having diecast frame and trucks makes it extra nice, IMO. My 2003 pocket guide shows the number to be 29257 and the date as 1999. Don't know how or if they are related to the 6565 series. Perhaps someone on here can shed some light. I was wondering the same thing about a 9464 UP boxcar that I saw in the 1998 catalog and stating that it has diecast trucks and "NEW" diecast frame. I would be interested in knowing more about the 9464 cars as well.

Jerry...THANKS for the information, don't know how you figured out the number of 29257 but that appears to be the product number of this car and the year matches ...1999   I agree that these (sort of) premium boxcars with diecast frames, heavy cast car bodies and sprung diecast trucks seem to come and go somewhat at random (to us likely not to Lionel).  I also hope that anyone with more information on these "9464" cars would post what they have found out.  OBTW, I did dig out my 2009 / 2010 Signature Catalog and did find the 3 car "add on" advertised for the White Pass set and it pictured my tanker.  Thanks again for that as well.

Jerry / Greg : Thanks for the input on the 9464 series car and I would agree that the 6565 series was supposed to be an upgrade to the 6464 series.  As I perused through my catalogs I did find a few more 6565 cars but I could find no picture or mention of the 9464 Southern box.  I did find it with the product number Jerry sent 29257.  Maybe we should start a thread about finding these premium boxcars because they really put the standard MPC boxcars to shame.

I have the Southern car, I believe it is referred to as the wave car.  This car has been on my tracks for years, and has been one of my favorites.  I can't say that for a lot of my rolling stock.  GregM mentioned the other cars in this series, all Pennsy cars.  Other than both being boxcars, I am not entirely sure I see the comparison to the iconic 6464 series.  The 6464 cars are great cars, yes and I collected many of the series of cars but have subsequently sold all of mine.  The only knock the 6565 is lack of detail but I attribute that more to the era they were made.  I don't think any of the manufacturers had the details in the cars that they now do.
