Today I received four WP California Zephyr Aluminum passenger cars by K-line. These are brand new in the factory sealed boxes and look fantastic! Too bad K-line didn't survive, they made great stuff. These are the 15" versions so they fit well on my 12'x8' layout, and they have interiors with people instead of silhouettes typically found in simi scale passenger cars. I'm totally stoked I found these being a WP fan. here's some photos.

Normally pulled by a set of Western Pacific F7 ABA's, they were all busy pulling freight, so leave to the good old #485 GS-64 to pull it from Paradise*, CA to Reno, NV. Then a set of F7's will take it the rest of the way to Salt Lake City, Utah. I think the silver cars look great being pulled by a black GS! i'm missing a baggage car from the same set, hoping to find one on eBay. Maybe someone here knows of one K-line K4613-10903 Zephyr baggage car

*I've posted this before in OGR, so for those that may not have seen that post, my layout is named after Paradise, CA. It's a fantasy rail stop, as there wasn't a passenger rail stop in Paradise's history, other than logging line for the Diamond Match Co. in Chico, CA. and other lumber mills in the area. I so named my layout because my Dad lived in Paradise for 25 years where in passed away in 2010. And then in 2018 the town burned to the ground in the Camp fire, killing 86 people. In memory of the life's lost, homes and businesses destroyed by the fire, I named my layout.

If you saw this post the Western Pacific F7's I ordered from Trainz.com arrived. This is a ABA set from the 2008 catalog and these look, and most likely are new. Here are some packaging photo's and the set itself on my layout. You'll see that the box looks pretty much untouched, but I know Trainz.com inspects them before they go on sale.

@WesternPacific2217, one of the p/n's would be 6-19121, which is a smooth-sided off-set vista dome car  with silhouette passengers.

I have that car on my saved eBay searches for a couple of years, and receive an email from eBay whenever one is listed for sale.  I've seen them offered with paint defects which appears to be paint cracking and bought two of them listed together at a BIN of $50 plus modest shipping.  When I received them, I noticed very faint paint cracking lines something like alligator skin.  Made no difference to me since they were/are for a paint project:  Great Northern Empire Builder.

Just thought I'd mention a possible issue with the dome car in this train set.

Picked this little gem up at the Davenport Railroad and Memorabilia show yesterday.

It was labeled as On30:

It's a brass body on a BLI HO switcher mechanism.  I suspect it's a conversion kit, but I have no Idea who made it.  The end doors scale out to about 5-1/2' high in O.  A little short but not unreasonable, (I've been through some pretty small prototype doors...) but it is dwarfed by a Bachmann On30 coach:

It's not improbable for On30 as prototype narrow gauge stuff is all over the map size wise.  Lettered S.M. Lewis Mining, it would a good loco for hauling dump cars out of an open pit mine.

As I primarily model in S, I put an S Scale figure on the platform and he doesn't look out of place and he can move comfortably around the locomotive.  So, I'm gonna call as an Sn42 locomotive.

I guess I'm also in Sn42 now...

I am very pleased with the purchase of the log unloading car.  I didn't even know such a thing existed until I saw one on YouTube.  So, so much better than the 'pop-up-plunger' style of unloader.  Like the barrel car I posted earlier, these post-war gems continue to impress me both in operation, quality and most importantly - play value!

The milk car of course isn't post-war, however seems to be built well and operates great! 

I just received this K-Line K77026IC 1995 TCA spine car set in the mail. It will go great with my Alaska Railroad, Canadian Pacific, or White Pass and Yukon Route consists. I've been after this set for years. I finally found it at a decent price and jumped at it.

I cracked open a couple of boxes this afternoon that I had forgotten about. This one from Sidetrack Hobbies has a couple of cool STD cars that I “needed”. I’m posting this because of what and how Al does business. If you look closely at the bottom of the image, you will notice both a gift pen and a refund / credit for shipping all enclosed in a box in a box in a box. Gotta love Sidetrack Hobbies! Thank you Al!

When I found out that the 2 C-Liners I was expecting in April had been pushed out to September, I figured I had some unassigned funds to play with, so I decided to review some of the offerings from the forum sponsors (that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!!!).

The first item isn’t really an impulsive purchase… I had ordered this from @Todds Architectural Models a while ago, and it just happened to show up along with my other purchases. It is called Birthplace of Basketball, Springfield, MA. It is a stunning building - all the levels have lights, but I just hooked up a few for the pictures. I particularly like the detail in the entrances.

Next up, I picked up two cars from Nicholas Smith to run with my 21’ PRR South Wind passenger cars.

Next, two offerings from Nassau Hobby. The Metro North caboose goes beautifully with the two MN hoppers they offered recently (now I’ve got to look for an MN diesel…). I still think they misspelled Lawn-guy-lind.

Finally, two from Beth at Public Delivery Track… the Susquehanna is an Atlas exclusive run Beth had done. The graphics are very sharp and impressive.

Geeez Paul you did it again! Just when I thought it was safe, I was awake in the twilight and looked at your post. Before I knew what was happening I ordered the PRR REFRIGERATOR EXPRESS CAR. 😱

Truth be told it will look good behind the PRR Union line reefers that I just ordered from METCA.

The part numbers I have are 6-9545 - Baggage

                                                          46 - Combo

                                                          47 - Observation

                                                          48 - Placid Bay Pass. Car, and

                                                          49 - Sunset Pass. Car.

Pretty sure these are part of the 1984 Lionel UP Overland Limited Set with a diesel engine set, plus possibly two more 15" aluminum passenger cars. They are all described as "smooth sided."

There is a possibility that 6-7210 (Dining Car); 6-19121 (Vista Dome); and/or 6-19152 (Duplex Roomette Car) may have come with the set, but I can't confirm and it looks like some were made in 1989.

I believe that 6-8481 and 6-8480 were the individual engines (powered, dummy and B unit), but I don't have a set number.

Looking forward to getting the Legacy AA set in December - thanks.

Managed to finally snag the Lionel state boxcar for my home state of Virginia at the most recent VTC show, and what's even better is I somehow managed to not have to pay an arm and a leg for it!

There were a few more things too I got from the same show but I don't wanna flood the thread with stuff.

@Tom M great pick up on the K-line 5 car spine set! They are nice and prototypical and still hold up well 20 years later. Love the versatility: two 20’ containers, two ISO contaimers, one 40’ container, one 48’ and finally a trailer. I have a 2 car set that I really like. But, I’ve considered buying them but never pulled the trigger on the full 5 car set.

@Apples55 what a haul! That “birthplace of basketball” building is super cool! What an interesting concept and well executed- and just a great looking structure.Love those 21” PRR passenger cars- that red is applied very well. It’s a nice, subtle “pop” and very classy looking. Was just at Nick Smith’s myself on the 9th, still really love that place!

Been lurking the Cabin Fever auctions since October.

They've been especially useful this year since I'm not able to attend York for the first time since 1999 (charter bus had to be discontinued, and I've no other way to get there)

I've obtained rolling stock from the MTH warehouse selloff, as well as pieces from unrelated auctions. I'll get around to documenting those in a later post, but I'll talk about this latest one since it's a single piece:

What I got at the auction is this Centerline track cleaner. The rollers and roller weight came from a separate order direct from Centerline Products.

You can see Cabin Fever made a little oopsie in naming the item The cool part was the selling price. All told, after auction, shipping/handling and packaging fees (yes, the shipping box is a separate line item on the invoice) I was in for just under $60 for the cleaning car. Which if you've priced a new Centerline, is an eye-popping savings

I plan to shine up the car with Nevr-Dull before putting it into service. The coupler on the right is bent upwards a little, which is keeping the knuckle from latching, so I'll have to remove the truck to straighten it. But those are little things.

Once I got the shipment tracking, I placed an order with Centerline for the rollers and the weight that goes in them. By sheer luck of order timing both packages arrived at my local post office here in The Bronx the same day (I watched their progress using 17track.net, which shows you all the in-between stops that carriers now hide from you on their offiicial tracking sites), which is even more fun to observe, being that Cabin Fever is in PA and Centerline is in CA.

Tom, I picked up a complete set of those containers years ago.  I had enough Lionel spine cars and a couple of K-line well cars that I didn't feel the need for the cars.  Subsequent to that purchase I landed another partial set of the containers, I believe it's short the UP container.

Great finds fellows, I picked up these sounds cars a few weeks ago, Happy Railroading Everyone

Here is what I have. Both MTH 999 ESE locomotives. They are really nice and run excellent. One from e-bay- new, the other from this forum. The difference between them besides the red/black bar on the front is the Maroon one was done with the 86in drive wheels while the Black one was done with the 70in drive wheels. The 86in drive wheel one was the one that set a speed record back in it's day. I had always wanted the 999 but I did not know MTH made two of the same one albeit with different size drive wheels. When I received my first one with the 70 in drive wheels someone commented they liked the Maroon on better, so off I went to look and find out why. I didn't even know there were two identical models with different wheels and colors. Then ironically one week later after I received my 70in one the 86in one  came up for sale on the forum and I grabbed it. These models don't come up for sale often, I've been looking to grab one for a couple of years now but the asking price is that of a Hudson, Niagara or Mohawk and I just didn't see the value in that. So I consider myself lucky to be able to grab two at a price that was acceptable to me. I'm happy with that!

would work well with the soon to be released METCA Freedom Isn’t Free boxcar.

I started putting my Santa Fe passenger train together. It is all MTH premier fluted stainless equipment and will be pulled by this set ABA set of F7s…

Very nice set Tom! I love covered wagons, and the passenger set looks awesome! Are the passenger cars 18 or 21”, it’s hard to tell from the photos? Like my new 15” California Zephyr cars they could use a few more passengers. I like the passenger with a newspaper in the dome car, that’s a nice touch. Would like to see them running on your layout one day. :-)

@Krieglok That is a great set.  I have the MTH cars as well.  Fantastic other than the vista dome lighting doesn't work.  I was told the wiring had rusted away.  Go figure.  Hope you have better luck.

Scott, they are 18” cars. A good size for me, not quite scale but very close!

JB, I will test the lighting soon. I have some more modern light kits I may use in the cars if they are needed…
