I am finalizing my track screw- down, and I read a "tip" in an old 1960s O-gauge article, saying something like "Serious modelers leave the switch motor cover unscrewed, so that they can lift it off to service the motor as needed."
It sounds like a good idea, but is it?

When I used O22 tubular switches, I never did that, but I can't imagine it hurting anything.
Only when I'm spraying them from small cans of flat paint in primary colors.
I have to admit, about once a year I have to lubricate those switch motors and it is a royal pain to remove them from the layout. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but they develop enough resistance that they don't throw all the way, even at max voltage. Next time I might try that idea.
When I used lionel switches I always left the covers unscrewed. When and if you ever need to service the switch you'll be glad you did. It's a no brainer to me.
