Can anyone explain why my engine stops or switches to reverse whenever I go over a switch track. Also I cannot go slow because it will just power off (the engine).

Need more details buddy. What kind of track and what kind of engine? Are you running conventional? Some pictures of the track would also help.
I think you need to provide information as to exactly what engine you're dealing with and what kind of switches you have.

Many smaller steamers have closely spaced rollers that are troublesome on switches. I agree with all the other opinions, need specifics to offer any suggestions.
I have a 2005 Pennsylvania flyer and I'm running on Fastrack I'll put pics in next post
Here's the engine and switch track

I couldn't get the pics straight sorry
Try to clean track and the rollers on the engine.we find that the rollers tend to get dirt build up on them. that may be why you can not run slow and have trouble over switches.
hope this helps.
How can I clean the rollers?
wipe then with a rag.
spray contact cleaner inside the roller.
I use Isopropyl Alcohol on the rollers and wheels, and then I use DeoxIT D5 on the roller shafts to help conductivity.
