How is this wired? I am looking at a working one, and can't for the life of me figure out how the track power gets to the bulb. I understand these are wired in series and take 6-8 volt bulbs. Is that the secret? It would need both bulbs to work at all.

I think I answered my own question. What was confusing me was that I have another 156 that someone had repainted. It had a wire running up through the post and attached to the rod across the top. It was not attached to the clip. Clearly this person had wired the accessory to use two bulbs on track power and not in series.
Your first diagram is the way Lionel intended the 156 to work. In the second diagram connecting the two clips together would get both lamps to work. The problem sometimes on these old accessories that did not use much wire is poor conductivity at all the mechanical connections.
In the drawing, I don't see how the RH light would work, no ground or return path. The 156 platforms have the die cast posts and the metal has crystallized and breaks very easily. I'll bet the RH post is cracked and the original owner used the wire as a work around.
